A friend of mine just told me about a position for a senior art director at Dentsu. Do you think I should go? ~ Senior
Dear Senior,

A frequently asked question and one that sounds like a tactical career question posed in the absence of an over arching strategy.

There are two questions prior to this question that you should have answered for yourself before considering whether Dentsu is or isn't the place for you: The first, what do you want to do with your career and where do you want to be in 10 years? This includes, what do you want your salary to be, what do you want your title to be, what accounts will inspire you each day and make you jump out of bed BEFORE the alarm clock rings? (Tell the truth, this is your own private list, no one is going to snicker at you.)

The second question is, what are the attributes of YOUR ideal job. What your friends or colleagues believe are the attributes don't really matter. Because they're not you. Write a list. Include size of agency, type of accounts, hours, culture, leadership, salary (remember it's not a question of how much you 'need' to make, it's a question of what you 'want' to make), opportunities to help you advance towards your ten year goal, and learning that you need to help you achieve your ten year goal.

Now. Take that list and compare it to the opportunity at Dentsu that you're currently considering. If it doesn't meet at least 80% of your criteria, then in my opinion there's really no point in going through the upheaval of a career move.

By the way, the checklist approach is also a good one for all you single people out there to create while you're still single.
