I was a creative person for 12 years, then I became a recruiter. As a
creative person, I had no career plan. I did have goals. To be a CD and
making $100K by the age of 30. I was a CD by the age of 28, and making
$90K by the age of 30.
My goal was too narrow. I know more about goals now.
I also didn't manage other parts of my career well.
I was a sucker for the "We'll turn this place into a creative hot shop."
spiel.
I didn't know the questions to ask in an interview.

Year." Things you want to do, should do, need to do. The first thing on the list, is making the list.

How
much money have you personally spent in the past two years to improve, enhance
or re-fresh your skill set in areas that you are lacking in? Either through
courses, conferences, webinars, coaching or any other means available to you?
The
biggest and best investment you can make in yourself, is to take a presentation
skills course from someone who is qualified to teach it. Almost every
multi-Cannes Lion winner is a very articulate, considered presenter. At least

To Agencies: Every
time a contingency recruiter sends you an unsolicited resume, you are setting
yourself up for the fact that some day, if you hire that person you may receive
a surprise invoice from them - that's how they work.
To
Talent: If contingency recruiter fires your resume at an agency where they
don't have a real mandate, they've just placed a bounty on your head which
could cost you getting the job. Yes. It happens all the time

Dear OutofWorkAdGuy,
A link to your website was sent to me yesterday by a colleague of mine in the industry.
I like that you're trying to do something different to get attention. I
like that you've made an attempt to brand yourself to stand out. BUT,
here are some things that I wanted to know that you DIDN'T TELL ME ONCE
YOU HAD MY ATTENTION!!!!! Arrrgggh.
If I may be so bold, can I share some feedback that might help you
create a more compelling piece of communication that may get... |

Creative Director or Chief Creative Officer (or any title that designates the most creative and professional, creative professional in our shop) to win awards for our agency. NICE TO HAVE BUT NOT NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION: the ability to make a compelling presentation; the ability to list most recent sales of your largest client within seconds; the ability to set a goal, write a plan, and lead the creative department to the achievement of that goal; the ability to show up on time;... |
That was the subject line of an email I received this morning from someone I met with early this week. He needed some career advice. He needed to 'pick my brain'. He need some feedback on where he was at in his career and what he could do about it.
I explained that "Heidi's Free Advice Now Costs Money". I've found that people tend to listen to advice they pay for. I also happen to know what I suggest works.
This morning he sent me this lovely email. With his permission, and with... |
The first line of "The Road Less Travelled" says, "Life is difficult."
And continues..."once we truly see this truth, we transcend it."...."Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult, it no longer matters."
I think the same could be said about having an exceptional career in creativity.
In fact, almost everything in that book could apply to a career in creativity.
It's in my top 3.

Eccentricity is not, as dull people would have us believe, a form of madness. It is often a kind of innocent pride, and the man of genius and the aristocrat are frequently regarded as eccentrics because genius and aristocrat are entirely unafraid of and uninfluenced by the opinions and vagaries of the crowd. ~ Edith Sitwell... |
Lots of people have been asking to go for a coffee to discuss the possibility of pursuing a career in recruiting. They'd like to 'pick my brain', and/or ask for tips and advice.
Here's my advice:
Be prepared to work 12-14 hours/day for the first 5 years. Only 12 hours a day and parts of most weekends after that.
There is nothing glamorous about it, it's not a schmoozy go-for-long-lunches career. It's about meticulous attention to detail, and managing realms of data with pinpoint... |
Fire four Account Executives or Account Coordinators and hire four killer Executive Assistants for your creative department. Help your creatives focus on ideas, not the stuff they suck at.
And hate.
Creative love to create ideas. They love to see where an idea can go, and where that idea can take them.
The other stuff? The stuff that makes them and everyone around them kookoo? They hate it.
There are Executive Assistants who love doing that stuff. Who would love to do it in... |
As you know, we're dedicated to helping creative agencies attract and hire the best of the best, and helping creative people craft a spectacular career.
Perhaps your article is about being laid off, and how you're using the experience in a way that
will be inspiring to others. Perhaps it will just be to share the
harrowing experience of looking for work, so that others will know
they're not alone. Perhaps you're a Creative Director, and you'd like
to share pointers on what it takes... |

A lot of people are doing a lot of interviewing right now mostly for positions that don't currently exist.
Which is great. This won't last forever, so why not use the time to get to know who is out there, who is doing what, who is great, and who isn't.
BUT.
If the people in your
company interviewing people at random, don't know how to conduct an interview, ask the tough questions, screen for fit based on the criteria you've provided, or tell a
compelling story about your company, they... |

It's been quite
the year, and from all reports it's going to be quite the year ahead.
We've renewed some old friendships, and made some new ones. We've
watched your stories continue, and your stories change, and your
stories
start. How exciting it is for us, to be a part of them. Sometimes in
a small way, and sometimes in a big way. Here's to grabbing
the bull by the horns in 2009, being unreasonable (as in not needing
reasons to justify our decisions) and each doing our part to pull... |

Why does much of the world move at the speed of the lowest common denominator now?
When our parents came to this country as immigrants, they
understood that no one was going to wait for them, no one was going to
make it easy, and no one was going to slow down and wait for them to
catch up.
What it created were people who worked hard, who applied themselves, and who didn't know the meaning of 'give up'.
There was no give up. There was no go home. There was only, "This is our new... |
Francisco's Money Speech by Ayn Rand
The following is an excerpt from Atlas Shrugged, Copyright, 1957, by Ayn Rand. It is reprinted with permission from the Estate of Ayn Rand.
"So you think that money is the root of all evil?" said Francisco d'Anconia. "Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can't exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another... |
Malcolm Gladwell was interviewed in front of a live audience at Convocation Hall this evening. He was speaking about his new book, "Outliers. The Story of Success." He told interesting stories, pulled great facts out of the air, shared some of the theses from the book, and in general was really quite engaging.
The moderator however, wasn't in the same game. Or didn't know what the game was about: Listening to Malcolm Gladwell, not him. He asked questions that rambled, so by the time Malcolm... |

Terry O'Reilly was the Master of Ceremonies at last night's ADCC show, and in my opinion, the highlight. (Not to take anything away from the show - which I love, and the work - which I always drool over. ) It was a highlight for me because Terry, an eloquent ambassador for our industry, reminded us that awards DO matter.
I am puzzled by people who've won so many awards they're no longer excited by them, saddened by those who have completely given up the notion that they ever will win an... |

He told us he was quoting Hilary Swank's acceptance speech when she won the Best Actress Oscar for Million Dollar Baby.
And he said, "I don't know what I did in this life to deserve all of this. I'm just a girl from a trailer park who had a dream."

In his new book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell argues that success is less about innate ability than birthdate and luck - and we may be squandering half of our nation's hockey talent
By Sabitri Ghosh, Special to The Globe and Mail, November 10, 2008.
NEW YORK - Malcolm Gladwell knows a thing or two about success.
His previous books, The Tipping Point and Blink, have sold more than three million copies combined in North America alone. He reportedly commands fees of $40,000 (U.S.) per speaking... |

I haven't seen his portfolio, but I would put Barack Obama forward as a candidate for every single one of the many Creative Director positions I've filled in the past 11 years.
Doesn't he have many of the characteristics as the world's best creative directors?
Or the world's best CEO's, Presidents, CFO's?
He is a leader.
He is able to inspire those around him to believe "Yes we Can".
In their darkest hour. When they are consumed with fear of their future. Paralyzed.
He's... |
